The first edition is published as a series of limited designer editions. The textile cover of each edition will be based on the design of a designer featured in the book. A list of designers and quantities follows. From Azzedine Alaïa to Cristóbal Balenciaga, Coco Chanel and Alexander McQueen to Yves Saint Laurent and Vivienne Westwood, the Fashion Institute of Technology's permanent exhibition (The Museum at FIT) presents the greatest fashion designers of the 20th and 21st centuries.

With their selection of 500 haute couture masterpieces, the curators of the most important fashion collection in the United States provide a visual guide through the history of fashion. Known for innovative, award-winning exhibitions and its holdings of more than 50,000 gowns and accessories, the Museum at FIT is one of a handful of institutions worldwide dedicated to fashion as an art form. At the core and fulcrum of the FIT collection are aesthetically and historically significant, landmark designs - dresses that made fashion history. The A-Z of featured designers ranges from Adrian, Balenciaga, Chanel, Dior.... to Xuly-Bet, Yamamoto and Zoran. Photographs of selected exhibits from the Museum at FIT illustrate the work of each designer, experts explain what their special significance is in context and what makes the models shown masterpieces. In addition to 100 of the most important fashion designers of the last century and essays by the curators, as well as a foreword by Suzy Menkes, the book also introduces the collection and exhibition work of a fashion museum. In her introductory essay, director and chief curator Valerie Steele outlines the collection's genesis and explores the phenomenon of the growing popularity of exhibitions about fashion and fashion designers.
